Around the Lodge

This year for our Disney trip, we splurged and stayed at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge. I normally book the All-Star Movies Resort, but thought we'd give the AKL a try. I am really glad we did. It was a wonderful resort, and the room was much nicer than the All-Star rooms - very nice bathroom area, bunk beds for the kiddos, very nice comfy mattress for me. Also, the deluxe resorts are all under one roof, more or less, allowing inside access to the restaurants, shops, and rooms - with all the rain and cold, that made a huge difference - and the theming of the resorts is amazing - pictures, artifacts, stories, just amazing! The deluxe resorts also offer kids' activities througout the day - arts and crafts, legos, games, educational activities - at the AKL these included Flamingo/Pelican feeding, animal tracking, habitats, etc. With all the rain, we spent most mornings at the kids' activities around the hotel. Trace loved the Flamingo/Pelican feeding activity, where using combs and confetti, the kids learned how the flamingos eat - by sifting shrimp from the bottom! They also had little pouches that the kids used to catch fish like pelicans.

The other really nice thing about AKL, since we spent SO much time at the hotel, is, of course, the animals. We had a savannah view room, so we could watch the animals from our room. Disney does a great job feeding the animals and making sure that the treats and food draw the animals out where they can be seen. Zebras, ankole cattle, several types of gazelles, reticulated giraffe, red river hogs, and pelicans/birds were all on our savannah. Here is a slideshow of a few of the animal pictures we took from our room and around the hotel!

  3. That lodge looks awesome! I'm glad that they had so many fun activities for the kids on the cold and rainy day! We're hoping to take the boys for their first Disney trip (and mine) next winter.

  5. What an amazing trip. There is so much Disney out there on the East Coast compared to our Disneyland out here in Cali. Sooner than later we need to get out there. My kids would have a blast!
